Why was the hair dryer invented?

Obviously, to dry hair, but the reason it was necessary to speed up the normal drying time for hair was so beauty parlors could wash and dry in a short period of time. Otherwise they'd have soggy customers strung out all over the place waiting for their hair to dry so it could be styled.

At the time the hair dryer was invented, the beauty shop regulations were such that you HAD to have your hair washed before they would perform any services. Today, you can just breeze in and get a cut or whatever, but it wasn't that way when the hair dryer was invented, so it served a real need.

It was so handy to be able to dry hair without sitting around for hours, that the demand for a portable, home hair dryer was inescapable.
