Ive bought a hair dryer for my girl ,and it has an u.s plug on it ;;can i just cut the plug off and put a?
Not unless it's marked 120-240 volts.(probably isn't, unless it's a travel model) And no you can't get a 'converter', as they are usually 500 watts max. You would need a site transformer 240/110 of about 1500-2000 va rating, which would cost more than the hairdryer.
Did you buy it IN the US? does it have two flat pins? Or two round ones?

If it doesn't have a voltage switch, then it is not intended to operate on 240 volts. It will burn up.
Convertors for high current devices like a hair dryer are very expensive. It is probably cheaper to buy a Euro device than to buy a convertor capable of powering the 1500 Watt dryer.

UK = 240vac US = 110vac
Unless it's auto/dual voltage it will go *bang* and blow the plug fuse.

I sugest that you should go to a travel shop and you should ask for an adaptor or travel plug. It is a kind of plug that you plug in the hairdryer plug and on the other side it has the standard UK plug that you can fit into the wall. You can enjoy the hairdryer without complicating yourself and when you travel to America, you can still use it there.
Look up a travel store. They usually have them in the airports or you may find them in a mall.
I hope this has been useful

Is the hairdryer marked as 120v, 240v or both. If the hairdryer is marked 120 only then you need a convertor. If it will operate at 240v either with a setting switch or because it is a universal travel type then yes you can. Follow the instruction manual.

Don't cut the the plug off. Since it is coming from the US,it's most likely to operate on 110 volts instead of 240 volts for the UK.Get a step down transformer or converter that converts the UK voltage from 240 volts to 110volts.I guess that's the best way to play safe
